An Artist's Life

Easter Angel

For Easter, I'm sharing my rescued angel. Many years ago when they were smashing their way through the countryside and small towns to build a new freeway in California, I spied a giant D-9 Caterpillar tractor bearing down on an old mission church. when I got there, two walls had toppled and I saw an arm sticking out from the new rubble. I yelled, beeped and then stood in front of the blade. When he stopped the beast, I dove into the wreckage and pulled out this lovely angel...well, not so lovely then. It was in 3 pieces....carved wood covered by a thin veneer of gesso. The rod holding the candelabra was bent. I took those pieces home to my studio and restored it. The candles were useless for light; so I wired it and now it serves as one of the strange lamps in my living room. The old prints are Croatian and Serbian. The reliquary is from St. Mary's Mission in a town north of here. My little corner of peace and good will.
