The Pelorus

National Coastwatch stations like ours at Fleetwood have a number of high-tech aids such as radar, AIS and excellent optics, but our most valuable tool is the simplest, the pelorus. This is the instrument which allows us to take a compass nearing on any point of interest, be it a person in trouble on the beach or a vessel needing help on the water.
