Urban Hike in Prague 8
Today's adventure was an urban hike in Prague 8. Known as a rather run-down area, not trendy at all, it has a slightly seedy reputation - but Prague 8 hides many gems. Because it is Easter, and because (even though I'm not) many of my friends are Christians, I decided to post a photo of a church.
St Adelbert was Bishop of Prague back in the 10th Century. There seems to be some dispute over his remains and he appears to have two skulls. Interesting.
He does, however, have an interesting church in Prague. This church was built between 1904 and 1905 and designed by architect Matěj Blecha. The story is that it was originally going to be dedicated to the beatified Anežka Premyslid, but the paper work didn't go through in time and the then Prague archbishop made an executive decision.
Prague 8 also houses some of the Czech version of allotments. I love this concept, though unfortunately it's not possible to see all the variations because only the owners or lessees have keys. There is also a rather old (started during WW2) makeshift settlement, where people can't own their houses - that said, it's rather more permanent looking than a 'shantytown'.
There is a gasometer, and there are several historical chimneys, and the Libensky Sokol building is another visual delight.
I had some walking instructions but missed my turn - not to worry though because I found all the things I was looking for. Just in a different order and taking way more steps. Well over my 10000 today!
Happy Easter to those who are celebrating.
