Diane's double rainbow

I thought you would enjoy seeing this view of Seattle taken by my co worker, Diane, from the roof of her house just after a torrential downpour. It is looking North I believe and that rusted looking Oz in the foreground is Gasworks Park on Lake Union.

Here is a little history of Gasworks: "This 20 acre point on Lake Union was cleared in 1906 to construct a plant to manufacture gas from coal - later converted to crude oil. Import of natural gas in the 1950's made the plant obsolete. The city acquired the site for a park in 1962. The park was opened to the public in 1975. The boiler house has been converted to a picnic shelter with tables, fire grills and an open area. The former exhauster-compressor building, now a children's play barn, features a maze of brightly painted machinery. Access to Lake Union is restricted at Gas Works Park, as the lake sediment contains hazardous substances. Entering the water or launching boats from the park is prohibited (SMC 18.12.070) There is no swimming, no fishing and no wading in the park."

During the 4th of July there is a wild celebration with astonishing fireworks and throughout the year people gather for impromptu local art festivals. I never acquired the habit of taking my babies there as I didn't want them to glow in the dark but it is fun to look at from the water as you go sailing by.

There are many sites such as this in Seattle, called Superfund sites. "A Superfund site is an uncontrolled or abandoned place where hazardous waste is located, possibly affecting local ecosystems or people."
