Bus Challenge No 12!
An early start to the day to catch the bus into Bristol, then a change of bus and down to the Somerset Levels and Glastonbury; a lovely sunny bus journey over the Mendip Hills, with the added excitement of having to pull into the bus depot at Wells for the bus to be topped up with oil!
Glastonbury Abbey was holding a Medieval Fayre in its grounds, with jousting, archery, falconery displays, battle reenactments, and a whole host of Medieval fun, including a very bizarre belly dancing display!
Once the grandest and richest Abbey in England, Glastonbury is also the legendary burial place of King Arthur and his Queen Guinevere. Another legend tells the story of how after the crucifixion of Jesus, Joseph of Arimathea came to Britain, bearing the Holy Grail - the cup used by Christ at the Last Supper and later by Joseph to catch his blood at the crucifixion. When Joseph landed on the island of Avalon (Glastonbury), exhausted, he thrust his staff into the ground, and rested. By morning, his staff had taken root - leaving a strange oriental thorn bush - the sacred Glastonbury Thorn.
