Fly on the Heather

Today was a bumper day in the garden, warm sun, flowers and small beasties... Took several arty sort of flower pics, one Small White butterfly, and several of this ?Bee-fly.

Haven't succeeded in a definite identification yet: single pair of wings, somewhat hairy body like a bee, seems to cling to the heather flower with its legs, has these dark eyes with a flat trapezopidal top... Any offers on clear identification, please? Oh, yes, and size? About 2/3rds of an inch (I am SO old-fashioned!) long. PS: No proboscis visible.

Glad to have succeeded (at last) in good definition.
