Out and About

The Chequers Inn

Apparantly this is the most photographed building in Tonbridge after the castle so I thought I had better include it. I knew I had to capture it in the morning when the sun was on it because my previous attempts have found it in the shade. I dashed up the High Street before my stint in the CAB and found the High St was surprisingly empty for Thursday at 9.o00am. I am hoping every one has gone away for Easter already because I am hitting the road tomorrow morning.

The Tonbridge history website describes it as one of the finest examples of a Kentish timber-framed building that can be found today". The building dates back over 500 years to the late 15th century.

A room on the first floor was used as a Justices' room and a hangman's noose still dangles from the sign post that juts out over the street. A reminder, to keep the locals in check.
