Stone breakers
Delicate flowers deceive.
They look fragile
As they rise on naked stalks
Above succulent foliage
But they thrive
In the unforgiving territory
Of the rock garden.
The word saxifrage comes from the Latin for rock or stone (saxum) and to break (frangere). Apparently stone breaker refers to the plant's medicinal use to treat kidney stones.
