There will be a couple of families today facing up to a relative or two facing what is now euphemistically termed "life-changing" injuries.

There was, according to BBC Radio Sussex, a 5 vehicle pile-up between junction 10A (Maidenbower) and J10 (Crawley/Copthorne) just after 7am this morning had reduced the motorway down to 1 lane. Just after 8am the Sussex Air Ambulance landed on the northbound carriageway. Thus everything had to wait whilst the casualty was extracted from the wreckage; received treatment and ,loaded into the air ambulance. I eventually arrived home 90 minutes late.

Interesting behaviour with 20+ cars at different times choosing to switch to the inside (emergency) lane. One driver, about 10 cars back clearly had, had enough of this and parked his car obliquely across the hard shoulder to stop the practice. For my sins I refused to allow a car which had jumped out of the queue and then shot up the inside of about 50 cars at J10A to re-join the traffic. I got a lot of verbal abuse but hey-ho I made the point.
