OLD ROAD SIGN

History around us again . . .

This small roadside marker clearly states the distances from this point to Scarborough and Pickering, UK and nothing much has changed since. What has changed is the County Name.

NRYCC stands for North Riding of Yorkshire County Council. Now Blippers all over the world will be familiar with God’s Own County of Yorkshire, which used to consist of three ridings - or divisions - North, East, and West Yorkshire.

Formed in 1889, the North Riding name was finally abolished in 1974 in favour of the new conglomerate of North Yorkshire. Of course, the old North Riding area is the best part of North Yorkshire – a special gem that we try to keep a secret . . . sssh !
