Hammersmith Bridge, London

Opened on 11th June 1887 by the Prince of Wales later Edward VII, the bridge was designed by Joseph Bazalgette. It is almost exactly half way along the University Boat Race course.

The day after Boxing Day 1919 Lieutenant Charles Wood dived from the bridge to save a drowning woman. She survived but he later died as a consequence of the rescue. There's a plaque on the bridge in memory of him.
