Small but Loud
Troglodytes troglodytes, the Wren has a very loud song for its size, in fact a very loud song full stop! I have never seen so many in one location before, there seemed to be dozens of them at Leighton Moss RSPB reserve.
Its scientific name derives from two Greek words translated as cave dweller, alluding to the Wren's habit of skulking in low undergrowth and favouring holes in walls or fallen tree stumps.
I have a thing about repeated bird scientific names, Vanellus vanellus (Lapwing), Pica pica (Magpie), Cinclus cinclus (Dipper) etc.etc...!
