George and John, Hamburg, 1962

These photographs were taken by Astrid Kirchherr from her limited edition book, 'When Was Fab.' Astrid was one of the first people to take interesting pictures of the then, pre-fame, Beatles. She fell in love with Stuart Sutcliffe, the band's original bassist. These pictures were taken in her Hamburg house after Stuart's agonising death at the age of twenty one. John asked to stand where his friend had stood in Astrid's attic, and to be photographed like Stu.
