The Biddenden Maids

Mary and Eliza Chulkhurst were supposed to be co-joined twins who lived in Biddenden shortly after William won the battle of Hastings. According to tradition they left money and land to provide bread, cheese and beer for the poor of the village every Easter.

The land was sold for housing and the beer replaced with tea but there is still a dole every Easter Monday and the village sign commemorates the twins.
