Warm to the heart....

Most towns in the southern part of Scotland have an annual Pageant/Festival with common features like the crowning of a schoolgirl queen, and a large group of horse riders going round the boundaries of the town to mark the extent of its territory.

In Dumfries it's called Guid Nychburris - and at least in my day was a very big annual occasion. It engendered then a sense of deep civic pride. Dumfries had its own proud song.....verse 1....

Warm to the heart as kin and kith,
Dear Burgh by the crystal Nith,
Thy charms and joys, thy magic spell
Who will not sing at loves thee well?
Green are thy meadows, fair thy face,
Home of our best, beloved place.
