Kitchen Tour

Today was the Architectural Heritage Center's self-guided “Kitchen Revival Tour” of 8 homes with original or authentically-renovated kitchens. We’ve attended this tour in the past but not for a couple of years so we thought it would be fun to go this year, I’m glad we did. The 8 homes were so diverse and were located all across Portland (there was a lot of driving), the youngest house was a 1960 Ranch and the oldest a 1904 Foursquare. Every kitchen was completely different, some hadn’t been altered in any way since the house was built (the 1960 Ranch), others completely remodeled (the 1904 Foursquare). The homeowners are big part of what makes this tour so fun, they’re on hand to answer questions and talk about their projects. In some cases where architects were involved they will also be there to discuss their designs, but a number of these homes were renovated by the homeowners themselves. There is always lots of material to look at too; before, during, and after photographs, as well as resource lists and that kind of thing. I always admire the generosity of the homeowners on these tours, I’m not sure I could ever feel comfortable opening my home to hundreds of strangers trooping through!

This kitchen was not on the tour but at the restaurant where we stopped off for lunch after seeing a house in the Woodstock neighborhood. ;-) The restaurant was jumping and we took the first seating available which happened to be at the counter giving us a great view of the kitchen bustling with activity.
