This evening I went to a concert by The Athens Singers, an amateur English speaking choir, performing a selection of Vaughan Williams pieces, with a small chamber orchestra and two semi professional soloists. It was really very good, though VW isn't one of my favorite composers.
Getting to the concert hall was quite a feat as the whole of central Athens, including the main central metro stations was closed down all day... Because Angela Merkel was visiting Athens for a few hours! But we are used to being creative about getting around as, apart from the frequent transport strikes and demos, it's normal procedure with all visiting dignitaries to close off the centre of town to allow them to sail around unobstructed, even without them being as unpopular as this particular one!
