A time for everything

Red-tailed hawk?

We got a treat this afternoon as we were walking round Sharon Woods. We had been walking pretty briskly, but had just met one of Roger's colleagues and his wife, so we had slowed down a bit as we were chatting with them. Suddenly this big bird flew across infront of us and settled in a nearby tree. Fortunately I had my big lens on at the time and managed to get a couple of decent shots. I'm not very good at my birds of prey identification, so I should be grateful if anyone can correct or confirm my tentative identification. I had been feeling cross with myself that we hadn't got going earlier today, and walked this morning while the sun was still shining. After lunch, we had choir practice with orchestra for our Christmas music presentation at church tomorrow morning, so it was fairly late in the afternoon when we were walking. However seeing this wonderful bird made up for the lack of sun! This evening we went out to see the movie Invictus, the true story of how the newly-elected Nelson Mandela joined forces with the captain of South Africa's rugby team, Francois Pienaar, to help unite their country. It was an excellent movie - I thoroughly recommend it.
Edit - Thanks to togrrl, I can now correct myself and say it's a Cooper's hawk!
