Magnolia 'Susan'

Meet ‘Susan’. She’s vintage---from 1956---when William Kosar crossed Magnolia liliiflora ‘Nigra’ with M. Kobus var. stellata ‘Rosea” to produce her. The two in our garden were likely planted around 1980, so are a good 12 to 15 feet tall and nearly as broad. I took the picture of the single flower and then realized that would not give a sense of what a profusion of color (and scent) pervades the eastern side of our house right now. So, forgive me, I simply could not do without a composite of these two photos. One for the magnificence of the individual blossom and the other the choral majesty of a huge shrub in full bloom.
