Faithfully Waiting
This lovely dog was patiently waiting outside a greengrocer's shop watching the whole time for his mistress to return. I took the opportunity to take this image as my blip for today's Shakespeare Challenge: The Earl of Kent - loyal servant to King Lear.
Lear is a mythical pre-Christian King of Britain, well-known in the folklore of Shakespeare’s day. Lear is a foolish king who intends to divide his kingdom among his three daughters.
The Earl of Kent is the most loyal servant of King Lear. He remains faithful to the King even after his banishment from his kingdom, disguising himself as the servant Caius so that he can continue to serve his master. Kent is an open and honest character who speaks his mind; he is clever and brave throughout the play. In his most loyal move, instead of owning part of the kingdom after King Lear's death, Kent said, 'I have a journey, sir, shortly to go; My master calls me, I must not say no.' Instead of thinking of himself, he thought of his master and decided that death with his master was better than becoming the leader of his own kingdom. In the end, Kent appeared to want to kill himself instead of live without his 'king.'
