Ta' Rikardu
Today was Freedom Day in Malta, to commemorate the day 35 years ago when the British Navy left the islands for the last time.
As a consequence everyone was enjoying a long weekend and heading to Gozo, exactly where we were heading to as well. However with the benefit of a Malta Tourist Authority guide we were whisked straight onto the ferry and then had a car waiting for us. We did a circuit of this more laid-back island and ended up at the Citadel in Victoria in the centre of the island for lunch at Ta' Rikardu. This is a bit of an island institution and is renowned for its fresh cheese, locally grown tomatoes, olives and capers, good bread and home-made ravioli. It was a cool and relaxing spot, and as we were about to leave Rikardu himself came in and kindly posed for a photo with a bunch of freshly harvested spring onions.
