Free education
This beautiful little building was the first grammar school in Leicester to offer free education for boys (sexist or what).
Built in 1573 with a bequest from the estate of William Wigston, the school was re-founded in 1564 when Queen Elizabeth 1 made an annual grant of £10 toward the upkeep of the master.
The plaque on the wall was erected in 1606/07 at a cost of 6 shillings and shows a list of the benefactors of the school.
The building is now a Bar/Restaurant called 1573.
The flats..sorry...apartments surrounding it are part of the Highcross experience..so far there are no takers.
