Walking over Newlands it is difficult to imagine that this is a re-made landscape.

St.John's Colliery opened here in 1870, the buildings made from local stone and bricks from the local Normanton brickworks.

They were still opencasting this area in the 1990s.

Now nothing remains of Newland Pit or its neighbour Park Hill, save a scattering of bricks.
