Bridgeness Distance Slab

This is a replica of the original Bridgeness Distance Slab which was found in 1868 and is still in situ about 100 yards down the road, although the inscriptions are pretty faded. It was built by Legionaries, in the 2nd Century AD as part of the Antonine Wall and each Slab was laid to record the distance in feet or paces. Some slabs were quite plain but this one was highly decorative. the left part of the slab represents the conquest of Scotland, the centre is in Roman Shorthand is in honour of the Emperor and the right hand part depicts a sacrifice which preceded the building of the wall.
