Mosaic

Took in a portion of the First Friday, Art at the Capitol, this evening. Our state capitol building in downtown Honolulu is a really beautiful place. The building is five stories high, orientated north/south, and open in the center, with large open corridors ringed by about footwide koa railings overlooking this large inlaid mosaic circle, which represents the sparkle of sunlight on water.
We were greeted by a girl, probably middle school aged, who suggested we go to either the Senate or Representative chamber to pickup a program listing the artworks in each participating legislator's office. We asked how to get to the upper floors and she pointed out the locations of the elevators and said we could tour the open doors on all five floors. We asked where are the stairs and she laughed and said no one had asked about the stairs. We did use them in both directions. A gentlemen who was about ready to take to the stairs as we headed for them, but the elevator came, decided to take the elevator - and we arrived simultaneously back on the first floor.
Hawaii was one of the first states to set aside one percent of the cost of a public building to fund visual art which is then placed into the public buildings to be enjoyed by all. Often, tho, it is not that easily seen. Next time we'll come earlier as we had less than an hour.
Outside the building, Prevent Child Abuse had planted silver/blue pinwheels on the lawn and they were spinning in the wind. I had driven by earlier on another day and the sunlight hitting the spinning silver was eyecatching, serving to highlight the tragic cases in the news.
