A promise of things to come!!

We called in by the pond on the way back from shopping today and noticed some changes. The 6 “babies” from 2013 were together, but the parents were chilling out further along. I then noticed that there were 3 eggs, no nest, on the small island in the middle of the pond. This is where mum laid her eggs last year.

The parents did the occasional swim round the island whilst a mallard drake stood guard over the eggs.

I checked out this website and this info was included

Number of eggs produced: 4 to 9 (average is 5)
Gestation Period: 28 to 30 days (Average is 28)
Canada geese lay 1 egg every 1 to 2 days; the eggs are usually laid early in the morning. Incubation takes an average of 28 days, with the female sitting on the eggs and the male guarding the area around the goose. The female leaves the nest in the early morning and late afternoon to feed, drink, bathe, and preen before all eggs are dropped (laid), but will not usually leave the nest once all eggs are dropped and she begins incubation.

She will not eat, drink, or bathe while incubating, because faeces will attract predators or cause bacterial growth. While incubating, she will keep her head tucked down low, so predators won’t see her.

Our nesting box activity at home is progressing with a very comfortable looking bed on view.

My plan for early blipping went out of the window after only one day. Spend an hour and a half on FaceTime tonight with D who moves house tomorrow and doesn’t have a landline telephone this evening. She goes in to hospital on Monday for surgery.

My father was born on this date in 1914 and would have been 100 yrs old today. Unfortunately he died in the early 1970's shortly after I got married. There is so much that we have missed sharing. :0(
