Haiti

I spent the morning with a group of traditional birthing attendants in Haiti. I felt like I was amongst 61 heroes. They walked for hours to gather from all over and meet for their monthly refresher course. This months topics was to review the dangerous sign of childbirth they should look for and send the women to the hospital if they see them. They sang, told stories of births from the last month, and ate together. Amazing. These men and women don't get paid for this job, but they do it because they "don't want to see their brothers and sisters die."

The picture was my dinner. They were so cute I felt bad eating them.
