Bread and cheese

I went on a National Park foraging walk a couple of years ago and we ate young Hawthorn leaves - they tasted nothing like bread or cheese, they didn't today either! I think it might be a euphemism as they were mostly eaten in times of need.
The only tasty things on that walk were ransoms and water avens roots. It's possibly the only time in my life I've suffered from indigestion!
