Pistols at dawn.

Well, before they progressed to pistols duels were fought with swords!

This plaque is on the side of St Mary's Church in Beverley. It commemorates a young Danish soldier in William lll's army who killed a fellow soldier in a duel and was subsequently executed for duelling.

The Green Dragon pub which dates back to the 17th century is just around the corner from St Mary's and is said to be haunted by the dead soldier.

The inscription is in Old English but some of the words remain the same.
