Shakespeare Challenge: Two-lips and C.U.P.I.D.

Had Shakespeare been writing today I think he would have embraced ‘social media’ and Cupid would be floating round the internet thus: Computer User Programme for Internet Dating.

Rather than draw his bow and fire the golden arrow, the programme would search for likely couples, matching likes, dislikes and so on. Then ‘click’.

The picture, by the way, represents key elements in the pursuit of romance; two lips and tulips.

He sat at his computer
“My dearest, darling, Pet”
he was writing to a woman
who he had never met

he was ‘male, non-smoker’
keen on art and books
she was ‘female, sporty’
neither cared for looks

at least that what they told themselves
as they prepared to meet
he with folded newspaper
a sign he hoped discrete

she brought her computer –
a laptop – just in case
the pixels on her hard drive
looked nothing like his face

he settled for a cheesy scone
she a soda-pop
it took a while before they spoke
and then they didn’t stop

they talked about their families
and things they meant to do
dreams and aspirations
things better done by two

cards were on the table
romance was in the air
each picked up a lonely heart
found themselves a pair
