The passing of time.
I was looking for one photograph at Castle Howard which represents the changing years, decades and centuries of the Howard family. The passing of time is depicted by the etching of glass, the peeling of paint, the blackening of a mirror. This image, captured in the 'High Saloon' seemed to encapsulate all these notions, with the reflected window and flickering candles. So, I avoided the Gainsborough's, the Romney's, the Chippendale furniture and the Sheraton fireplaces and I studied this surface. I took several shots, everyone different. This is a visual metaphor for the passing of time. Imagine the past, the splendour, the characters, the colours, the fashions, the music, the conversations, the laughter and the consumption of vast quantities of food and wine. All that social interaction happened in the High Saloon at Castle Howard, across time.
