Passing places
Those not in the know imagine that Surrey, being so close to London, is total suburbia, but this is very far from the truth. This lane is typical of the lanes that climb the dip slope of the North Downs and on the greensand ridge to the south. Before they were metalled the sandy or chalky surface was worn away over the centuries making the roads deeper and deeper. This one, not far from my home, usually carries quite a bit of traffic, especially at the weekend when it is thick with cyclists, but this morning I was able to stop in the middle of the road for my blip! Usually the frequent passing places are in constant use. Just out of sight in this photo is a World War 2 pill box, showing what a vital route this would have been!
