Diary of an Edinburgher

Uncle A saves the day...

It had to happen (did it? did it really?). I managed to lock myself out of the house by 10am this morning. A combination of being in a hurry and chivvying the window man out the door as I was late for the doctor, a change of routine with locked doors, and temporarily removing the keys from the hiding place in the garden … All meant that I arrived back and could not get in.

Thank goodness for Uncle A! I walked down the hill, hoping because it was a dreich day, he wasn’t up and off galavanting already. I did not have his phone number in my new phone yet, because I can’t seem to simply ‘import my contacts’ as they claim.

I popped to the doctor, as I just feel I’ve just been left being topped up with Vitamin D - in May I will have had a year’s supply pumped into me, to no avail, so I wanted them to try something else. I got two big boxes of painkillers (2x4 per day), gel to rub in three times a day on the knees, and an appointment for a new xray. I could start a pharmacy with my stock of pills!

Wandered off to ping pong, via town. The haar is still here. I see everyone else in the UK is basking in sunshine! The Castle was almost invisible! There is an exhibition of huge microscopic photos, as part of the Science Festival, but it was these two wee kids who caught my eye.

They were dancing round on top of the steps - perhaps they’d seen the finale of ‘Sunshine on Leith’... The parents were chatting and ignoring them. They’d climb down then run around the big photos, then, seeing the adults were still yakking, climb back up again and carry on. You can see how dreich it is, but the other direction was better, with the Royal Mile in the mist. It was hard to get a shot of both faces, though, so it had to be this one.

Ping pong was quite social today, and I enjoyed the chit chat on the sides as much as the games. One lady, Mary (possibly) was telling me about the time she (dressed as a nurse) pushed John Bellany* round in a pram at some art student carry on celebration in the 70s. He fell out and bumped his head. The college stopped the long standing celebration carry on the following year.

I told them I was going away for a couple of weeks, I think I detected some looks of disappointment...

Or maybe I imagined it...
