Sunday: Joseph

Our final morning in Dubrovnik before flying back to Zagreb this afternoon.  Before leaving, though, we had time for a walk through town, a trip in a glass-bottomed boat (touristy, but very very lovely!), icecream and a final leisurely al fresco lunch.  It has been an excellent weekend!

It is hard to believe it took us so long to get to Dubrovnik - having said that, it is still the other end of the country, which means either a flight or an eight hour drive, so it takes a bit more planning.  The wait has been entirely worth it, though.

For me, what is so unusual is the amazing wealth of imagery.  Each building seems to have some mysterious detail or carving, quite unlike things I have seen in other places.  Other worldly knights with swords, green men, owl-faced gargoyles - I should ask my friend, A.-C., about these things - she is very clever on this type of stuff.

It made me think of something I couldn't quite put my finger on and then this morning I realised that it made me think of Charn, in C.S. Lewis' 'The Magician's Nephew' - but as the city would have been when it was still good and kind and before it fell to dark forces............

Totally unrelated to C.S. Lewis, I finished 'Cash - The Autobiography' by, ahem, Johnny Cash while I was away.  I love Johnny Cash but think that he was a better musician than writer - never mind, it was an entertaining read.
