What sort of duck are they?

They appeared to be a pair as they were doing a courtship routine, swimming and head bobbing in unison. About the size of a mallard, no white on them anywhere, and they look almost black when out on the water at a distance.
I have searched my bird books and t'internet with no luck.
Anybody got an idea?
