log cabin

Case moths, bag moths and bagworms are names given to a group of moths whose caterpillars spin a portable home from silk and then attach sand, sticks and detritus from their environment.

The caterpillars cart the homes with them in the larval stage which in some species lasts up to two years.
'When fully grown and ready to pupate, the caterpillar firmly
anchors the case and closes off the ‘mouth’ opening. A
dense cocoon is woven within the case and just before
pupating the caterpillar reverses its position so that the
head is pointing downwards.'

Log cabin is just the perfect description for this beautifully constructed case moth's mobile home.
Isn't nature clever!!
