Ferry

Fabulous weather - makes the job so much easier!

Shetland is made up of several islands, the three main ones being the Shetland Mainland, then Yell, then Unst in order of direction travelling north.

You can see the ferry from Toft on the mainland here on the left of the picture just about to arrive at Ulsta, on the island of Yell.

From there, it's about a forty minute drive up to the north end of Yell to catch the ferry at Gutcher which takes you up to Unst.

Each island has its own qualities and special places. But what ties them all together is the constant exposure to the sea, the wind, the sky. The islands seem to hunker down, surviving a constant onslaught from the environment.

Shetland is a place of elements, simple, and clear cut. It is a desolate and a beautiful place all at the same time, a sliver of rock and earth and peat with humans clinging onto it in a vast vast ocean.

You either get it, or you don't. Total clarity. Total polarisation.

It's wonderful. I love it.
