Foul day yesterday so we didn't set off over to the west coast as planned. But now we are in Moana after a great drive through flat cow countryside via Geraldine, route 72, past lots of lakes, huge shingle river beds, ancient hills covered in prickly scrub and tussock grass, sometimes along the narrow gauge railway and finally over Arthur's Pass where the trees got thicker and were more like rain forest. There was a sprinkling of snow on the mountains after yesterday's southerly storm but rapidly melting. What looks like snow here is scree!
