Scarborough South Bsy
It is rare indeed to find a seagull in distress in its own habitat but
such was this unwelcome sight awaiting me not long after dawn.
From a distance its wings flapping helplessly had seemed like paper
blowing in the wind but somehow rooted down. Had it scavenged
something which had induced disorientation? Would it recover before
a dog found it? Should I intervene to prevent any further distress? I
looked this proud bird in the eye and felt if there was a chance of survival
it was not for me to take that away. Shortly after on this walk lines of
Wordsworth came to mind - the poem concerns a beggar but the
sentiments are no different.
"As in the eye of Nature he has lived
So in the eye of Nature let him die "
As I passed this struggling bird again the recollection of these lines
made me more than happy to walk on and not look back.
