Pete's birthday
Today is our friend Pete's 86th birthday and we had planned to take him to a local airfield to watch the planes. He joined the RAF and says he always regrets not staying on, but he chose to leave as he had a wife and baby daughter. They went on to have twins, a boy and a girl as well. The three of them were also visiting when we got there, so we all enjoyed cakes and coffee with him.
In 1953, whilst co-piloting a Lancaster Bomber, he crash-landed on the island of Anrum, having flown out of his base in Sylt, Germany.
Luckily, the previous week he had watched a new Hollywood film ( that Sav and I also saw sometime last year but can't remember the title of ) involving a similar crash landing of a Lancaster. In the film, the co-pilot's legs were damaged/burnt in the crash and this stuck in Pete's mind, so as he crashed, he lifted his legs up to preserve them and I'm happy to report he's still up and about on his uninjured legs! Who says you can't learn anything from Hollywood?!
