A day in the life of a drummer...

This is my typical routine on the day of a gig.

I always start by looking at the charts/songs that we'll be playing. That sets the tone and next I choose the cymbals I'll be using that'll work best for those tunes. Sometimes I'll bring chimes or cowbells too.

Then I think about the room and which drum sizes will work best in that room. Bass drum is normally my main concern....

Following that, I check my stick bag (pictured). I make sure none are chipped or broken. If they are I keep them for stirring paint! I also check the batteries in my reading light as I always get stuck in a dark corner and can't see my music.

Next I warm up my hands for an hour or so on a practice pad. 50 mins with a metronome then 10 without.

Then I drive to the gig, load in, set up and go.

1,2 ah 1, 2, 3, 4

Boom!
