Back To School

If I had my way I’d be a professional student, if there is such a thing. Unfortunately, my school days are long over, but I’ve discovered some online courses and some home DVD courses and now I’m on a roll.

The first course I bought was on geology, something I’ve always loved. Many years ago I had an opportunity to attend Eastern Montana College briefly and I started studying there with an eye to majoring in earth sciences. I was obsessed with earthquakes and desperately wanted to be a seismologist. Clearly, that didn’t work out and so I now consider that a hobby. Since my new DVD set arrived on Friday, I’ve been glued to the TV watching a series of 36 lectures and I am having a grand time. The nice thing about the DVDs is that if I don’t get the message the first time around I can just watch them again, and again, and again.

This particular set of lectures came from The Great Courses and is delivered by Professor Michael Wysession, Associate Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis. We’re getting along really well. I wish I could be an “in person” student, but this isn’t a half bad substitute.

I also bought a course on writing, one on storytelling, and one on photography (of course). I think I’m good for a couple of months, but I feel like I’ve discovered a gold mine so who knows what will come next.
