#21 Rimulose
DDW March Challenge #21 Rimulose
This is bracket fungi, also called shelf fungi or bracket conks. They come in a myriad of shapes and formations, with names like dryad's saddle, artist's conk, and turkey tail, and can range from being classified as slightly rimulose to extremely so. Online, I found a similar fungus to this one which was designated 'slightly rimulose,' with chinks around the edges and cracks between the fan-like folds. Sturdy and resilient, they grow on living and dead trees, and the bands of different colors you see are annual growth rings, which means these bracket conks are over 20 years old! They were flourishing abundantly on a dead tree trunk down by the river where we take the dogs for their daily constitutional.
