Lovers' Padlocks.

The increasing trend of couples showing their unlimited love for each other by locking padlocks to a structure caused me to think through the etiquette. Does one use a padlock with a key and then throw it away? Or do you keep the key, just in case? Or should you use a digital padlock and do both lovers need to know the code?
