Interior of St Nicolas Church, Itchingfield

After work which I'm not allowed to say any more about except that it has been traumatic, I stopped off again to visit Itchingfield.

This church dates from Norman times (c.1125) and the N wall of the nave is completely Norman, with small deeply splayed windows. The chancel was rebuilt in 1713 using some of the orginal Norman windows. In 1865, the S aisle was added by Sir George Gilbert Scott. The tower is entirely of wood and is 15th Century. When it was built, there was no existing tower and it was just built up against the west wall of the nave, with no physical join. The church has just undergone a very careful repair and is now back open and in good condition.

It was very peaceful here today with bright sun after some overnight rain. It was the perfect place in which to contemplate recent events and to pray for all involved, friends and colleagues at a difficult time.
