Redundant?

I'm told by my resident lawn expert that it isn't necessary to use a roller on a lawn nowadays. I wonder what has changed since this roller came into my possession?
Whether it is used or not, I think it is an attractive feature in the garden.
My car will be out of action until the middle of next week at least, so expect home based blips for a while.
