Sunshine
There's no sun outside - it's cold and blowing a howling gale - but these sunflowers are cheerful. They were part of a surprise bouquet from #3 daughter, and it said on the ticket that they were ethically sourced from Kenya. I hope this is true as over the years I've seen a vast increase in the greenhouses along Lake Naivasha. It is a major industry but brings vast problems. The pollutants from fertilisers etc discharge into the lake, having an adverse affect on the fish and therefore birds there. A guide told us that workers' health had been damaged because of the working environment, they got no medical help from employers, and that small farmers had lost their land to the big European flower firms. Most of Europe's flowers are grown in that area and shipped to the market in Amsterdam daily before making their way to our local supermarket, garage and flower shop.
