Victorian Folly

Today it was a gorgeous clear sunny morning when I went walking with a friend at Carberry Woods, where Mary Queen of Scots surrendered to the English after her husband, Bothwell had escaped. After a quick exploration of these historic woodland we drove along to Dalkeith Country Park which is the seat of the Duke of Buccleuch. Walking in the country estate we came across this ruined mock Gothic orangerie, which was built in mid-Victorian times as the centrepiece of a formal garden. According to a notice it is the estate’s intention to restore this building to its former glory but I can only imagine how much this might cost.
