Something green...

So today was St Patrick's Day - traditionally a day to celebrate St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland and actually the day of his death. A man who was a saint but wasn't Irish, a day of drinking alcohol when alcohol was typically banned due to it being a religious day, a day to wear green when the colour of Ireland is well apparently blue although that flag looks a bit green to me, a day of shamrocks - an adapted word from the Irish referring to the clover plant and used by St Patrick to explain the Holy Trinity. I'm not Irish and don't knowingly have any Irish blood in me at all. Today I donned green and dressed my daughter in green so she could celebrate an American holiday known as St Patricks day. She got to chase a leprechaun's footprints across the entire school, reaching the leprechaun to find he had left his doll behind (her words!!) holding a basket of chocolate coins. Then her lovely teachers gave her a candy rainbow to help sweeten the day further. A fun event, a great chance to explore fairy tales, candy and the school grounds. One day we will really explore the meaning of these special festival days but for today - sugar 'em up and let's go dancing - but can I change into a different colour mum as I don't like green!!
