Ice Rockets

“They go fastest right before something breaks."

Here is "Chilly Willy" and 10 other ice boats out on Lake Michigan near Muskegeon. Iceboats carry a single individual. Because of the speeds involved (iceboats in general can travel 5-10x wind speed), or 60 mph, ice sailors wear protective gear, including helmets. An intimate knowledge of ice conditions and lake topography is essential.

"Like sitting on top of a freezer at 60 miles per hour."
